"Moses My servant is dead; now therefore arise, cross this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them, to the sons of Israel"
The past is gone. Moses is dead. The wilderness has happened, Egypt is a distant memory, and a sinful generation has been dealt with. Don't look back! Don't pine after Moses, and the glory days of Moses, you didn't like them anyway! Arise. Move forward. The land is yours to take. Don't stay on this side of the Jordan another moment, it's time!
But you have to cross over. One more river, another water holding miracle required, and this time, no problem! No fear this time, the presence of the Lord will go before you, the ark of the covenant will part the seas and you will walk on dry land. There is no one chasing you this time, you are the one doing the chasing, the agitating, the possessing. The table has turned. Now it is on your terms Israel, the people are afraid of you. (2:24)
Step into what God has already given you. You have to possess it, little by little, what God has given you. You have to do it in His ways, unconventional at times (Jericho…), but stay tuned to what He is saying, for the captain of the Host of the Lord is in your midst (5:14). And do it together! "You and all this people". This is a corporate possession. Well led, yes, but it is about the whole of Israel working together.
Isn't this a grand picture of Jesus? Moving forward, parting the water (the curtain), making a way, opening up possibilities, and there He is in the midst of us. We are to possess what He has already possessed for us. It will be a fight at times, but do it in His ways, lock-step with Him, and we will possess the promises of God for us. Today.
