85-year-old Anthony Smith crosses Atlantic on a raft « 100gf | Politics and Computers
An 85-year-old British man, Anthony Smith, has completed a 66-day Atlantic crossing on a small raft. Smith, together with three friends, set off in late February for the 2,800-mile journey aboard the An-Tiki, a 40ft sail-powered raft. They travelled from the Canary Islands to the island of St. Maarten, and the trip was partly paid for by some compensation money that Smith received following an accident. Smith has apparently always wanted to make the crossing, and didn't let his age get in the way. The crew had plenty of food, and were even able to use a small oven to bake bread. They had a good fresh water supply, and the whole voyage aimed to raise money for the WaterAid charity, which campaigns to ensure that as many people as possible have access to potable water.
