from defencetalk: US keyboard warriors were doing battle Tuesday with a simulated cyberattack on government and private computer networks that undermines basic trust in the Internet. The "Cyber Storm III" exercise involves participants from seven US government departments, including the Pentagon, 11 US states, 60 private companies and 12 international partners.

The biennial exercise is being staged by the Department of Homeland Security and is the first test of the new National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center based in an office building in this Washington suburb. The NCCIC booted up in October 2009 to serve as the coordinating center for US cybersecurity operations and houses US government computer experts and their private sector counterparts under one roof.

Briefing reporters ahead of "Cyber Storm III," Brett Lambo, the director of DHS's Cyber Exercise Program, stressed that the exercise, which is expected to last three days, is "completely simulated... We're not attacking any real networks," Lambo said. "We're not taking down a network. We're not injecting any real malware."

The thousands of participants in the exercise will receive more than 1,500 "injects" of simulated events that they will have to react to as unknown adversaries seek to exploit known vulnerabilities in cyber infrastructure...

The international partners taking part in the exercise are from Australia, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden and Switzerland.

'ex-cia' head hayden says US should be able to shut down internet

from reuters: Cyberterrorism is such a threat that the U.S. president should have the authority to shut down the Internet in the event of an attack, Former CIA Director Michael Hayden said.

Hayden made the comments during a visit to San Antonio where he was meeting with military and civilian officials to discuss cyber security. The U.S. military has a new Cyber Command which is to begin operations on October 1.

Hayden said the president currently does not have the authority to shut down the Internet in an emergency.

"My personal view is that it is probably wise to legislate some authority to the President, to take emergency measures for limited periods of time, with clear reporting to Congress, when he feels as if he has to take these measures," he said in an interview on the weekend.

"But I would put the bar really high as to when these kinds of authorities might take place," he said.

He likened cyberwarfare to a "frontier."

"It's actually the new area of endeavor, I would compare it to a new age of exploration. Military doctrine calls the cyber thing a 'domain,' like land sea, air, space, and now cyber … It is almost like a frontier experience" he said.

Hayden, a retired U.S. Air Force general, was director of the Central Intelligence Agency during the administration of President George W. Bush from 2006 to 2009.

A writer's work is never done....

I am definitely exhausted at the moment.  It’s now 6:15 PM here in Miami.  I’ve been at it since I got up, at exactly 1:08 PM… Oh, yeah, I like to pull my late nights on weekends, and then get up late, too.  Not that I go out clubbing or anything.  My late nights are spent on reading, mostly, or browsing on the Internet.  I try to combine both. 

Since Friday, I’ve been obsessively busy with this one Twilight-inspired story, “It Happened That Night”.  I originally posted it on fanfiction.net, a couple of years ago.  It was the last story I posted on that site, and I had not been back since.  I guess I got hung up on whether or not I got a lot of reviews.   I know I shouldn’t be, but when I see that any of my stories is not getting reviews, well, I can’t help but feel bad…

Suddenly, out of the blue, my subconscious mind decided to tinker with it again. And tinker I did!!  I’ve only stopped now.  I think the story is finally the way I want it to be.  It does feel complete now.

I wrote an entirely new section for it, and revised and revised and revised it until I had it just ‘right’.  Then I went back into the older section of the story, and revised some parts of it, as well.  

I deleted my original story from ff.net, and posted the new and improved version, with the title “Saturday Night in Port Angeles”.  I hoped no one would remember the previous story, but I couldn't risk it.  With a new title, it would surely stand a chance to be read, I thought.

I’m very much a perfectionist when it comes to writing.  And I’ve always heard it said, by writers with many books in their resumes, that one should do a lot of revising. One should be willing to toss out the most incredibly beautiful sentences, if they’re not contributing anything meaningful to the story, not advancing the plot, or telling the reader anything about a  character that they didn’t already know.

This is why writing is so time-consuming, and downright hard work.  This is also what makes it such a daunting undertaking.  But you know what?  The more you do it, the more passionate you get about it.  The more you lose your fear of the writing process itself.  

When you first put fingers to the keyboard ( occasionally I do put pen to paper, as I did before my computer geek husband got me a laptop), you feel stiff, unsure, even intimidated.  The important thing, though, is to start.  Once you get going, sometimes you can’t seem to stop!  (Like now, for instance, lol.)

So you start writing, timidly at first, and then, you’re suddenly on a roll, and the words just seem to write themselves on the page, and before you know it, you look up, and the sun is setting, or your spouse asks you a question which you answer with a moronic ‘huh?’

It’s now 6:38 PM, and I am calling it quits for today, “today” being the operative word, of course.  Lol!

UN TANTO REFLEXIVO

Hallabase aquel hombre llamado loco , un tanto reflexivo, un tanto cabizbajo y se hallaba frente a un gran espejo. Y unos profesores de una renombrada academia quisieron un poco entretenerse con él, se acercaron y le dijeron:
- ¿Qué te pasa ?¿ Por qué te ves con timidez y apagado?

Entonces él inocente como un niño, balbuceando como quien comienza a hablar, les dijo :
- Tengo este espejo delante de mí y no me puedo ver, lo he intentado muchas veces. Me he acercado y aún no me he visto. He intentado sorprenderlo por la noche y a veces escondido he venido a tratar el verme pero no lo conseguí. Y aún así ,como al mediodía cuando hay mucha luz pero no me logro ver.

Ja,Ja,ja – se rieron .Y le dijeron:
- ¿Cómo es que no te puedes ver?

Y se pusieron delante del espejo y le dijeron:
- Míranos o acaso tampoco nos puedes ver, como es que nosotros nos miramos y tú dices que no te puedes ver. Sí esto es un espejo significa que hay una imagen delante.

Y aquel loco que se hallaba como cabizbajo, les dijo:
- Pero Uds. aún no me comprenden. Yo igual en el espejo a Uds. no les puedo ver.

Ja,ja,ja – se rieron . Y dijeron:
- Pobre loco, cada día está más loco.

Y se alejaron riéndose de el. Más él siguió pensativo y cuando éstos se habían alejado un poco de él , dijo casi en silencio:
- ¡Que triste ! Que en este espejo no me pueda ver, pero con seguridad yo no soy tan solamente esa imagen que se refleja en el .
