We watched two video's featuring Professor of the Social Studies of Science and Technolog, Sherry Turkle.
The first was from television series Big Thinkers and can be found on Youtube here.
The second was in interview on the Colbert Report available for viewing at the The Colbert Report site.
Although the video's contrast in the stylistic presentation (the first a formal inteview, the second a humerus interview), both express Turkle's contention that the human interaction with social media and social media technologies needs to be defined and "put in its place". She foresees a continual reduction in human interaction as the 'individuals' ineraction with electronic devices grow in volume.
For the most part I agree with Turkle's contention. As a 23 year old I had established healthy relationships and face to face communication skills with family and friends. This involved the ability to communicate with people you do not know. If the human interaction with technology continue on the same path, there is potential that in the not too distant future that it will be common for children as young as 8 to have access to social network systems via smart phones and computers. This would likely have a flow on effect where the communication skills of an entire generation are reduced and limited.
By then it will likely be too late – A generation of 20 something year olds with communication deficiencies is a hard trend to turn around. Turkle's argument would of course have relevance for today's society, but is founded in the protection of future generations.
