decay rates of radioactive elements are changing?

An axiom of physics seems to have smashed against the hard wall of reality? Ernest Rutherford et al, father of nuclear physics, made observation in 1930, a radioactive substance follows a fixed exponential decay but new evidence runs counter to this "physical law". In a recent Discovery News article, Purdue researchers have noted decay rates that vary with the Sun's 33-day rotation! The article also asks whether Sun emitting a new particle that may be altering decay rates? The Purdue researchers, Ephraim Fischbach and Jere Jenkins, note also an annual variance which correlates with the Earth's distance from the Sun in a 2008 physicsworld.com article. “To summarize, what we are showing is that the decay constant is not really a constant,” says Fischbach. This emerging story will be interesting to see how physics establishment reacts to challenge of a basic tenet? It may be the case, radioactive decay rates have always varied to subtle degrees and we just haven't noticed?

När vi köpte bilen fick vi med en iPad som vi hämtade nu i veckan. Först tänkte jag sälja den då vi sannerligen behöver pengarna mer än en leksak till, men så packade jag upp den i alla fall. Man klarar sig helt klart utan den men det är en ganska rolig leksak ändå. Angry birds gör sig helt klart bättre i stort format om man säger så och ska man sängsurfa är paddan att föredra framför iPhonen, främst pga formatet. Jag är sugen på att börja prenumerera på DN+ men det för vänta tills ekonomin blivit lite bättre. Jag har testat ett par gratisdelar i alla fall och det var kärlek, minst sagt!

Pga paddandet har jag knappt öppnat min vanliga dator varpå jag fått efterlysningsmail från folk som undrar var sjutton jag håller hus eller om jag ignorerar dom. Haha, nästan lite sorgligt va?!

Undrar om det finns något annat tangentbord att APP:a in på paddan, det var rätt bökigt att skriva det här… Ska ge mig ut och leta. Ses! Dela: Dela Facebook

Far too long since I told “What’s on my Needles” | Yummy Yarn Studio's Blog

Knitting is taking on a life of its own in my home.  I have many socks in various stages of complete and frustration so decided a couple of nights ago that I needed to knit something that wasn't a sock.

I picked up the Haruni Shawl pattern months ago.

When I saw the pattern I knew immediately that I had to do it and that I had the right yarn for the job.  At least I had the right amount of yarn for the job.  Wollmeise 150g/510yds.  Enough that I can do some extra repeats with the pattern as I too believe (as stated by the Yarn Harlot) either be a scarf or be a shawl but you can't be both at least not well.

I picked up the colourway in London on my trip to the UK in January.  I loved the colour (Spice Market) and was told over and over it is the best the English shops can provide.

Really?  Am I the only one that doesn't get this?  Perhaps for socks they will wear like the Iron-woolcraft stated on the label but as far as hand feel during the knitting process is concerned, I am not impressed.  A softer version of twine is all I can say.  Perhaps it will improve with wear and washing. 

The pattern calls for 3.5mm needles.  Alternate needles can be considered so I started with 4mm.  Ripped that out pretty quick and I am now working on 2.75mm an am happier with the look.  Still not happy with the feel of the yarn.

I will perservere with this as all those who love this yarn (and there are many) can't be wrong.  Can they? Share this: Facebook Email

Snake Handlers workshop on 17th July 2011 at Candolim

SNAKE HANDLERS WORKSHOP

 AN INITIATIVE OF HERPACTIVE AND MHADEI RESEARCH CENTER.

to be held on 17th July 2011 (Sunday)
Time- 10.00am to 1.00pm.

Over the last few years, I  have found  more youth  interested in snake handling and more specifically, in rescues in the state of Goa. The skills that some of you posses vary for mere handling of snakes to observation and photography, etc.
Many rescuers are now at a stage where they have done all the ‘cool stuff’, posed with  with various species for pictures and kept some of the attractive species in captive conditions.
Unfortunately, what lacks is collection and compilation of data that would help you study these reptiles and help conservation in the long run. A need for a common protocol for snake rescue and release needs to worked out as this will help minimze and address issues relating reptile-human conflict and provide vital answers to this growing problem. Rethinking the need for snake rescues and other aspects of snake conservation is also the need of the hour.
Keeping these objective in mind we at HERPACTIVE are taking this initiative to bring together 25 snake rescuers of North Goa as a first step towards helping train snake rescuers in the new Snake Bite Protocol, Data sheet maintainence and basic taxonomy besides other related activity. This is an opportunity for those snake handlers who wish to take a step ahead beyond being mere snake rescuers and combine hands on work with serious study of herpetofauna.

The 2nd stage will have a similar program in South Goa for snake rescuers in South Goa.

Time- 10.00am to 1.00pm.
Venue- Candolim, Bardez Goa. (Exact venue will be intimated at later stage)
Age Group- Above 18 years and above.

voyager adventure in three minutes

A wonderful three minute NASA video provides story of Voyager spacecraft launched in 1977, a link provided via article at Universe Today. The video celebrates contributions made by the two craft as they near Interstellar Space. Ed Stone, California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, a Voyager Project Scientist, estimates in an article at NASA website, "...heliosheath is 3 to 4 billion miles in thickness...[which]...means we'll be out within five years or so...In many ways, the heliosheath is not like our models predicted".

The video and article relate details of Golden Record, "The Sounds of Earth". "Each probe is famously equipped with a Golden Record, literally, a gold-coated copper phonograph record. It contains 118 photographs of Earth; 90 minutes of the world's greatest music; an audio essay entitled Sounds of Earth (featuring everything from burbling mud pots to barking dogs to a roaring Saturn 5 liftoff); greetings in 55 human languages and one whale language; the brain waves of a young woman in love; and salutations from the secretary general of the United Nations. A team led by Carl Sagan assembled the record as a message to possible extraterrestrial civilizations that might encounter the spacecraft." You can only imagine what the record would bring at auction? It's an interesting story to revisit 33 years later!

The Media is a Sounding Board for what is to Come « Covering Delta

Glenn made a point during his 30 min speech that I thought was quite insightful, and that I happen to agree with. While speaking about the establishment media, Glenn pointed out that the very structure of these organizations – that they are part of large corporate conglomerates – breeds a type of deference to and adornment of authority. This lapdog mentality can be seen in the way that modern journalists act as unapologetic mouthpieces and publicists for the establishment.

Case in point, Bill Keller, Executive Editor of the New York Times, who gleefully admitted during a BBC interview in November 2010 that the NYTimes clears any controversial evidence it may get from sources with the US government first before it publishes it. The host of the show was so shocked by Keller's admision that he asked for clarification:

KELLER:  The charge the administration has made is directed at WikiLeaks: they've very carefully refrained from criticizing the press for the way we've handled this material . . . . We've redacted them to remove the names of confidential informants . . . and remove other material at the recommendation of the U.S. Government we were convinced could harm National Security . . .

HOST (incredulously):  Just to be clear, Bill Keller, are you saying that you sort of go to the Government in advance and say:  "What about this, that and the other, is it all right to do this and all right to do that," and you get clearance, then?

KELLER:  We are serially taking all of the cables we intend to post on our website to the administration, asking for their advice.  We haven't agreed with everything they suggested to us, but some of their recommendations we have agreed to:  they convinced us that redacting certain information would be wise.

ROSS:  One thing that Bill Keller just said makes me think that one shouldn't go to The New York Times for these telegrams — one should go straight to the WikiLeaks site.  It's extraordinary that the New York Times is clearing what it says about this with the U.S. Government, but that says a lot about the politics here, where Left and Right have lined up to attack WikiLeaks – some have called it a "terrorist organization."

Likewise, the same impulses that work to corrupt the integrity and independence of journalism today are identical to those that have pacified the population in the United States at large. If you want evidence of this, look no further than the immunity of wall street and government officials from prosecution of the most blatant forms of fraud, as well as all sorts of civil rights abuses including kidnapping, rape and torture. These are not just rumors. These are allegations that have appeared in mainstream publications by well respected journalists like Seymour Hersh, Jeremy Scahill, Robert Fisk, Matt Taibbi, etc. How can crimes of this magnitude go unpunished, let alone the alleged perpetrators never even be tried in a court of law?

The answer, in my view, has much to do with the citizenry's deference to the power elite, and fear of what prosecuting these authority figures would mean for their own fragile conception of self. Such actions would require the citizenry at large to take responsibility for life and liberty into their own hands. Exposing our "leaders" to criminal proceedings that could very well lead to life sentences or even the death penalty would challenge the notion that there is some benign sovereign who is there to care for us and to make sure that everything will be ok. This is the mentality that you would expect to see in children, but not in self-relient adults.

Fortunately, as the social circumstances in this country become more and more absurd, an increasing number of people (still the minority) are demanding that their rights as sovereign individuals be respected, and are prepared to wrestle power away from the establishment in favor of a more equal playing field. The media space may just be where this dynamic is most clearly on display, but I contend that its vector emanates from the society at large, and that this call for more freedom and individual responsibility will only grow moving forward.

I am thankful for people like Glenn Greenwald, Jeremy Scahill, Matt Taibbi, and other members of the real media, who are more interested in telling the truth than in ingratiating themselves with the power elite. They give the rest of us motivation to continue exposing the falsehoods and the propaganda in the face of escalating criminality and seemingly hopeless legal inertia. Share this: Print Share
