Looks like Prince Albert will not have to pull a Hugh Hefner and stamp "Runaway Bride" on his wedding invitations! The palace has issued a statement saying that Prince Albert II of Monaco's wedding (dubbed "the other royal wedding" by the press) is going forward, despite odd rumors that his fiancée Charlene Wittstock was planning to flee the country.
According to a sensational report in French news magazine L'Express, former Olympic swimmer Wittstock, 33, was seen trying to board a flight to her home country of South Africa. The article claimed that the "shaken" bride had discovered that her 53-year-old fiancé's private life was "not as exemplary as she imagined." After being stopped by airport officials, Wittstock was allegedly persuaded by Prince Albert and his entourage to go through with the marriage.
"The sole intention of these rumors is to seriously damage the image of the Sovereign, as a result of damaging that of Miss Wittstock, and bear down on this happy event," said a statement from the Royal Palace, which also declared the L'Express story entirely false.
Prince Albert has never married, but it's true that his personal life has been a source of scandal in the past. The son of actress Grace Kelly and the late Prince Rainier III, Albert has fathered two children out of wedlock, a daughter with an American waitress and a son with a Togolese flight attendant. (He denied both paternity claims until DNA tests came back positive, in 2005 and 2006.)
According to the Daily Mirror, another pregnant woman is now allegedly planning to name Prince Albert the father of her unborn child. If that's true, it could certainly cause some distress for his bride-to-be.
"A woman could very well be pretending she is pregnant by the prince," said Royal commentator and Albert's friend Stephane Bern, adding some weight to the rumor. "We can't carry out a DNA test to check this out days before the marriage."
At the moment, though, everything is looking rosy for Albert and Wittstock, who have been seen walking arm-and-arm around the French Riviera. Their wedding will be a lavish $65-million, three-day event, topped off with an elaborate "light and music spectacular" over the Mediterranean.
Among the 500 guests expected to attend: Demi Moore, Ashton Kutcher, Gerard Butler, Naomi Campbell, Karl Lagerfeld, Bishop Desmond Tutu, President Nicolas Sarkozy of France and King Gustaf of Sweden. The events kick off Thursday night with a free Eagles concert for all residents of Monaco. Maybe they'll dedicate "Take It Easy" to L'Express?
