Basilio Magno - (Journalist-Songwriter)

Basilio Magno is essentially a journalist but he is better known as a composer-lyricist. He started composing and publishing songs in English in 1950 and was dubbed by critics in Bombay as "Irving Berlin of India". Among his many published songs are viva el rey, beloved England's sweetheart, Friede Komm, O Rock de portugal, Polle Sndor ti, Folk-operetta, a day in Goa, 10 folk songs in English, audio and cassette by basilio.
It was in the month of February 2007, I had read an article about Basilio Magno in the newspaper, and I was particularly interested in two of his compositions "Proud to be a Goan" the anthem of the World Goa Day, which was composed at the request of the founder of WGD which is celebrated annually on 20th of August, since the year 2000 and his prized song 'Friede Komn' dedicated to his holiness Pope Benedict XVI, Its a ballad on Peace. I wrote to Basilio an email to him asking him for the songs. I had an instant reply from him and not only that he sent me his compositions by post which included "Proud to be a Goan", "Meet me at Calangute", "Lets sing and pray for Blessed Joseph Vaz", "A Hymn to Xavier" and many more of his musical pieces. He has been a good friend of mine fover the course of time. He is son of the Goan soil - a "pakkha-goan". After his retirement in Germany, as a pensioner he is presently living in Spain along with his wife Rosa Maria Lopes Gonsalez (Rossi). He Celebrated his 84th Birthday this year on 14-06-07. He was a special invitee to the Convention of the "Goan Diaspora in Lisbon" where he was asked to make a presentation about his work and his understanding of Goan Music and about all his new songs composed, including the World Goa Day anthem. He played his compositions the song that caught everyone's attention was "Come to Goa" - a mini story of Goa told in words and music, meant more for children, adapted to the old Goan air. Proud to be a Goan and his latest production-flock-rhapsody "Ring Wedding Bells (a 10 minutes boy-girl duet) the other pieces of his music played.
Basilio though in Spain his heart is in Goa and for Goans has also been writing a column "Konkani corner" on www.melgoans.com.

EL AMOR JAMAS DEBERIA MORIR

El amor jamás debería morir, debería vivir por siempre, sin embargo muchas veces esto no sucede así. El amor siempre es magnifico , siempre es dedicado, integro , y podría enumerarse muchas de sus virtudes , pero el amor tiene un defecto , un defecto que no es malo para si porque es parte de su naturaleza pero en los azares de la vida, la vida toma este detalle y es lo que hace morir al amor.

Y ¿Qué puede ser esto? Es difícil de comprenderlo, parecería una contradicción. Lo que mata al amor es cuando se ama demasiado; y si amas demasiado veras al ser amado como un rayo de luz , como el sol del amanecer, como el cielo azul , como la inmensidad del mar, como la hermosa flor , y así te equivocarás y entonces no veras defectos , y hasta lo malo lo disculparas y lo justificarás .

Y seguirás amando demasiado hasta que te des cuenta , que tu solamente estas amando , y aquel ser amado es distante y ya no te ama y quizás nunca te amo. Y te das cuenta que aquella flor era marchita, que aquel rayo de luz era oscuridad y que aquel sol radiante era la noche, aquel mar infinito era un desierto, y es que eres solamente tu , inventando mil sonrisa, mil caricia, y mil te quiero , pero nada más . Y el amor entonces así habrá muerto, pues ese gran amor en verdad nunca existió.

Viva King Momo

The word Carnival comes from the latin word "Carne Vale" which means "farewell to meat", meaning that those were they days one could eat meat before the lent season began.


Earlier in Goa the carnival celebration used to be a quite affair with celebrations being centered around the village. Carnival is indulgence of festivities and merry making young people swarmed the streets throwing colour powder on each other. It was only after the 1961 that floats were introduced. Today with the participation of the Government and also big corporate's using it as a platform for advertising a lot of commercialisation of carnival has taken place. Today we have bigger and creative floats with include the King Momo, traditional dancers, floats based on themes . There are lot of cultural programs, dances organised all over the state during the carnival season. The festivities begin with the king momo announcing the Carnival Open and he supremacy reigns for the next three days of carnival celebrations. Carnival Floats are paraded in the major cities of Goa. It always bring alive the sprit. One can see people dressed in masks, funny clothes to amuse people, fancy dressers, lots of colour's and glitter sprinkled all over. Its a peoples festival, The last day of carnival is the closing of the festivities.



However, with the commercialisation of carnival, the local flavour has virtually been left out according the the older golden generation of Goans they do miss out the carnival of their younger days. But still Carnival in Goa Rocks "Viva Carnival - Viva Goa."
