I was definitely Team Shawn Johnson, but Nastia Liukin performed beautifully tonight (especially on beam) and under incredible pressure! She competed neck in neck with Yang Yilin of China (who also performed really well) all night, but in the end she came out on top, joining the other two previous American women's all-around Olympic champions, Mary Lou Retton and Carly Patterson, with a well-earned gold medal. Nastia's Dad, Valeri Liukin won double gold medals in gymnastics for the Soviet Union 20 years ago, and her Mom was a world-champion in rhythmic gymnastics. To say this moment was meant for Nastia is a severe understatement (When she has kids, she can start a legacy of Liukin gymnast spawn, can't wait for that reality show). America is badass! Shawn Johnson edged out Yang Yilin and finished with an impressive silver medal, just sixth tenths behind teammate Liukin. This brings the overall American medal count (in all sports) to 43. Rep them stripes!!!
-MACK (is still in Texas, Nastia's homestate!)
