'Cosby Show' Star Clarice Taylor Dies

'Cosby Show' Star Clarice Taylor Dies

Actress Clarice Taylor, who played the mother of Bill Cosby's character on the beloved 1980s sitcom The Cosby Show, died of congestive heart failure Monday at the age of 93.

Taylor's rep tells People that she was surrounded by family when she passed away.

An actress for more than 50 years, Taylor (pictured second from left in a Cosby Show episode) began her career in theater and made the leap to movies in 1969 with a role in the sci-fi drama Change of Mind, about an African-American man who is implanted with a white man's brain. She went on to appear in the 1970 Liza Minnelli film Tell Me That You Love Me, Junie Moon and 1993's Sommersby, opposite Richard Gere and Jodie Foster. Her big break, however, came in 1974, when she landed the role of David's grandmother Harriet on a little show called Sesame Street.

But she's best known for playing Cliff Huxtable's (Bill Cosby) sassy mom Anna on 19 episodes of The Cosby Show, which ran from 1984-92 and earned Taylor an Emmy nomination in 1986.

Taylor is survived by sons William and James, as well as her five grandchildren.
