'Desperate Housewives': Is the End Near?

'Desperate Housewives': Is the End Near?

How long can Desperate Housewives go on? Certainly ABC's darkly funny drama can still attract viewers -- about 10 million of them tuned in for last month's season finale. That's not bad for a fictional neighborhood in its seventh year of sex scandals and murderous intrigue. Granted, it was beaten by its time slot rival, CBS's Survivor: Redemption Island, which drew more than 12 million viewers, but it was still a respectable showing.

That might be why reporters jumped all over Felicity Huffman at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival yesterday, after her husband William H. Macy mentioned that she "has one more year of Desperate Housewives."

It was clearly a slip-up, because Huffman swiftly corrected him, reported E! Online. "No, that's not been decided yet, but I love that Bill is spreading rumors," she said. "No, we're signed up for two more years. It depends on the ratings whether we'll actually go two more years or not, but we're keeping our fingers crossed. I'd like to go two more years. I love the work, I love working from home, it's the job of a lifetime, so I hope it goes two more years, but maybe it's just one more year. It depends on how we do."

In other words, the cast is signed up through Season 9, but that doesn't mean the show will be picked up for that long. Network execs might be a little wary of the show's ability to keep things fresh for two more years. How many disasters -- plane crashes, bomb explosions, switched-at-birth babies, and serial killers on the loose -- can one neighborhood sustain? Why are all these people still living on Wisteria Lane? Sure, it's pristine, but also, obviously...cursed!
