y me hacías volar, y alcanzaba yo
a suspirar lo mas alto del firmamento.
Mas ahora, que no te tengo,
que se haga la tierra
y mi mente ,cuerpo y sentido,
se tenga así que sepultar,
por que si algo puedo valorar
es tu ausencia y el saber
que no te tengo, es mas triste
que todo lamento.

St. Alex Chruch, Calangute

St. Alex Chruch, Calangute

The present massive Church of Calangute is the third one built in the village. The first chapel was built of palm leaves (olas), along the sea-shore, in actual Poriett, in 1576. It was filial to the church of Nagoa. The church was erected, with a cemetery, in 1595 by the Franciscans at the expenses of the Ganvkars (village people) in the same place where there was previously the chapel, this is, in Poriett, where there is still a cross, vestige of the church-cemetery. (It is interesting to note that a procession was taken on holy Friday from the actual church to the cross of Poriett till around 1940, remembering the old church site. today the feast of the holy cross is celebrate in the same place) it was only a simple structure covered with palm leaves. It was set on fire. Soon it was demolished for being too small.

The existing church was built in 1741 by the Communidades (village communities) with the help of donations. The towers were erected in 1765. There is a "cupola falsa" of Indian style. Its main sanctuary "capelamor" was rebuilt on July 16, 1916 and blessed on July 16, 1916. The church was entrusted to the diocesan clergy in the year 1767.

In the church yard there is a Grooto of Our lady of Lourdes, it was the first grotto dedicated to the Our Lady in entire Goa.

Its pulpit in Rococo style was brought from the Church of Holy Rosary, today misnamed as the church of St. Francis of Assisi. It was describe by Prof. Jose Pereira in Marq (Golden Goa) as follows: "Thus happens in the pulpit as Kongotti, a palpitation of volutes, cantouches, encincture, canopy, pendants, flounces and tassels, all crested by the figure of the lamb of Apoclypse in the book of Seven Seals - a vision of white-and-gold climaxed by the symbol of an innocent victim god, or of the elegance of the Rococo going up in a flame of mystical flamboyance.

The church has two towers and a magnificent dome (Like that of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome), with its seven altars, the three main being at the center and two sides, dedicated to our lady of the Mount, Our lady of Perpetual succor, the sacred heart of Jesus &d Mary and the Our Lady of the immaculate Conception. The church is indeed unique.

Patron of Calangute Church: St.Alexius

(extract from the book Saint Companions for each day)

St .Alexius was the only son of a rich senator of Rome, Euphemian, and his wife Aglae, born and educated in that capital in the fifth century. From the charitable example of his parents he learned that the riches which are given away too the poor remain with us forever, and that alms-deeds are a treasure transferred to heaven, with the interest of an immense reward. while yet a child he was intent on the relief of all whom he saw in distress, and though himself obliged to those who received his charity and regarded them as his benefactors. fearing lest the distraction of earthly honors might at length divide or drawn his heart too much from more noble objects, he decided to renounce the world.

On his wedding nigh, by gods special inspiration he secretly quit Rome, and journeying to Edessa, in the far east, gave away all that he had brought with him, content thenceforth to live on alms at the gate of Our lady church in that city. Here he lived for seventeen years until and image of Our lady spoke and revealed his holiness to the people, calling him, "the man of god", thereupon he fled back to his home, his father did not recognize him, but received him as a beggar and gave him employment, allotting a corner in his house..

For seventeen years he lived here unknown, bearing patiently the mockery and ill-usage of his own slaves, and witnessing daily inconsolable grief of his spouse and parents, at last, when death had ended this cruel martyrdom, they learned too late, from a writing in him own hand, who it was that they had unknowingly sheltered. God bore testimony to this servant's sanctity to many miracle, he died early in the fifth century an is buried in Edessa.

St. Francis Xavier

St. Francis Xavier

Francis de Jasso Xavier, was born on April 7th 1506 at the Aristo critic castle at Pampelona, Navarre, Spain. He was the youngest son of Dom Joao de Jasso Xavier and Maria Azplicueta e Xavier. The Xavier Castel was destroyed in a revolt in 1515 and the family left Spain and took up their residence in France. Francis pursued his studies at the University of Paris.
After graduation he came in contact with St. Ingatius of Loyola who wielded a great influence on him. On completion of his priestly studies, he joined the society of Jesuit which received Papal approval in 1540. It was on his 35th birthday in 1541 that Francis embarked for Goa in the company of the new governor of Goa, Martin Affonso de Souza in the boat "S. Tiago'. After a span of 13 months he reached Mormugao on 6th may 1542..

The governor insisted that he should reside it the governors palace as he was aware of miraculous deeds performed by him in Italy but Francis preferred to reside in the "Hospital Real" and care of the sick and lepers in the Hospital de S. Lazaro. It was from there that he started his missionary actives.

He was disgusted with the functioning of the administration The Portuguese rulers wallowed in immorality, greed and usury, social injustice luxury and licentiousness of the merchants, soldiers and so called "Fidalgos" added to the general moral degradation. male and female slaver were being sold at suction in marked place the women were being exploited for sensual purpose. There was no regard for spiritual values at all. He would say Mass, take care of lepers, visit inmates of the prisons , he used to go begging for his favorites the "the poor, sick, lepers and prisoners" wherever he used to go people used to flock around him. and after a stay of 5 months and 10 days he left Goa for Cape Comorin, when he returned to Goa after 18 months and took up his residence at the Colegio ded. S. Paulo at old Goa.

On his return to Goa he wrote the the king of Portugal informing him abut the misdeeds of the governor and his administration and demanded his removal which was granted as his request and the King of Portugal ordered the setting up of special school attached to the churches in all the villages of Goa

Not satisfied with the spreading the faith in Goa and the others coast of India his missionary sea led him to conquer more kingdoms for Christ. he envisaged the evangelization of China and Japan. Undaunted by his strenuous missionary worked in Goa for about 9 years and after laying the foundation of the expansion for Christianly. Francis left of Japan where he was well received and preached the catholic faith. it was his ardent desire to preach the gospel in china and harvest should for Christ but god willed otherwise.

Worked the rigors of life of prayers, penance and hard work Francis was sized with fever on the island Sancian, on his way to China which he never reached. Francis was dying with a lighted candle in his hands and with the name of Jesus on his lips, Francis rendered his soul to his creator and lord. His indomitable spirit which could no longer be caged in his frail mortal frame, left it and winged its flight to meet this lord and master on Dec 2, 1552.

After his death, Francis was put in a Chinese style coffin and his body was covered in two layers of line to accelerate the process of decomposition so that his bones could be taken to Goa when the ship set sail

Two months late while the ship was on its way to Malacca the body was exhumed and when the lime was removed it was found intact an as fresh as it was buried. the body was then taken to Malacca where it was buried a second time. five months late it was exhumed an found incorrupt. it was put on a board S. Ana en route to Goa but on reaching a place near baticola the boat could not proceed for reasons unknown. the news reached Goa and the governor sent another boat the Santa Crux with priests and dignitaries and bought the body to Goa. They anchored at Ribandar and the body was taken to the church where it remained for the night.

The next day it was taken to old Goa amidst great rejoicing. It is said that en route the bells pealed merrily of their own and cannons fired shots from all the forts mysteriously. the body was kept in the church of S. Paulo for 3 days for public veneration. This was the first public exposition of his body of the saint.

It was at this exposition that a Portuguese lady D. Isabel Crom in her desire to have a relic of the saint bit off the little toe of the Saint. she however returned it to the Jesuits when she felt her end was near.

The church was slow to acknowledge it him as a saint, requiring a medical examination to establish that the body has not be embalmed. It was performed, in 1556, by the viceroys physician, who declared at all the internal organs were still intact an that no preservative agents had been used. He noticed a small wound in the chest an asked two Jesuits to put their finger into it, and noted, when they withdrew them, they were covered with the blood. It was said to be absolutely untainted" it was not until 1622 that canonization took place, by then, the holy relic hunters had started work on the incorrupt body in 1614 the right arm was removed and divided between the Jesuits in Japan an Rome and 1636 parts of one shoulder blade and all then internal organs had been scattered through South-East Asia, by the end of the 17th century the body was in an advanced state of desiccation and the miracle appeared to be over.

There have been several exposition of the body after both private and public. The former have been at the request of visiting royalty and dignitaries. The Jesuits now enclose the corpse in a glass coffin out of view and it was not until the 19th century that the current cycle of 10 yearly expositions began.

The body of St. Francis has undergone changes and can no longer be called incorrupt. During the exposition in 1974 Msgr. Ral Gonsalves the then Apostolic administrator held a press conference at bishops house and the following statement was disbursed " We cannot talk presently about and incorrupt body but only of sacred relics of the saint"

In commemoration of the fourth centenary of the death of St. Francis Xavier and in recognition of the work done by his successors in the missionary field Pope Pius XII is August 1953 conferred on the Arch diocese of Goa the Rosa d'oorro (Golden Rose). This way the most ancient and ennobling distinction of the catholic. it has a height of 94 cms and the entire gift consisting of metals and precious stoned weigh 40 Kgs. it was insured for $25000.

St. Francis was a great missionary of the 16th Century conditioned by his time, culture, temperament theological formation and spirituality. In today's materialistic and hedonistic culture and consumerist society., Francis Xavier has a special attraction for the youth, the young people appreciate what is authentic and real, whenever calls for self sacrifice, freedom justice , fraternity, love, service and peace are not mere empty words for them the are potent concept which, when translate into action, give meaning to fie and urge youth to make important decision involving sacrifice. St. Francis Xavier is considered not only as a patron of Goa but also as the protector to all the Goan's.

Fr. Agnelo

Characteristically, he grew up manifesting qualities of gentleness, of love and purity, humility and obedience combined with a strong sense of self-discipline.

He was not given to much of talking, unlike the boys of his age, and usually preferred silence and prayer. Teaching catechism to the boys was his favorite childhood hobby. One of his uncles, Fr. Lazaro Fortunato Souza, seeing his teaching activities, uttered these prophetic words: "Agnelo will one day be a virtuous priest and a renowned preacher."

Both these prophecies came true, for during his studies for the priesthood he proved to be brilliant and Godly and never missed the daily Mass at the Seminary of Rachol where he completed his discourse of theology with distinctions.

Fr. Agnelo had set his sights high in the service of God and aimed at cultivating assiduously all the priestly virtues.

After completing his second grade examination of Primary Curriculum helped by his eldest brother Manuel Aristedes (also a priest) Agnelo studied Latin for 2 years in a private institution. He then joined the minor Seminary at Mapusa and later went to Rachol for higher studies in Philosophy and Theology. He believed he could do better in a Religious Order. Agnelo was admitted as a candidate in the Society of Pilar on 17th July 1897 - the Feast day of our Lady of Pilar, Patroness of the Convent and the Society. While still a candidate he was ordained Deacon on 18th December 1897 at the monastery of Santa Monica and five months later on 22nd May 1898 made his first profession as a member of the Missionary Society of Pilar. The Society of Pilar was founded by Fr. Bento Martins in 1887.

On 24th September 1899, the feast of Our Lady of Merces, the then Patriarch Archbishop of Goa (first Patriarch of the East Indies), Dom Antonio Sebastiao Valente, ordained him a priest at the Se Cathedral of Old Goa, and celebrated his first holy Mass at the Monastery of Pilar. From then on, Fr. Agnelo's spiritual life can be studied under two phases.

The first consisted of ten years he spent at Pilar more or less in seclusion, prayer and meditation and occasionally going out on pastoral work at the request of his superiors.

It was a preparation par excellence for his later apostolate as a Pastor, Confessor, Preacher and Spiritual Guide.

Fr. Agnelo decided to dedicate himself entirely and perpetually to the service of God. On completion of the second 5 year period of his profession Fr. Agnelo made a solemn promise of perpetual dedication to the service of the Society on September 8th 1908, the day of the Nativity of Our Lady on the steps of the altar of Our Lady of Pilar, in the presence of his superior and brother members of the Society.

He was appointed on 8th September 1908 as Confessor to he Seminarians in Rachol, and by the influence of his personal life of austerity, holiness and benevolence, he strengthened the Vocation of many a young penitent.

From 1910 to 1917 he served as Missionary Vicar of Shiroda in Goa and On December 10th 1909 Fr. Agnelo was appointed as Missionary Vicar of Kumta in North Kannada by the Patriarch of Goa Dom Matheus de Olivera Xavier and took charge of his post on 6th January 1910. He served in Kumta till 21st May 1917 after which he was transferred to Goa as curate of Sanvordem Church as curete.

He left in all these places a memorable legacy of his holy living and pastoral concern. He had an intense devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and spent a few hours each night in adoration.

Fr. Agnelo was appointed Spiritual Director of the 'internal' students of the Rachol Seminary on 20th May 1918. On 15th April 1920 he was confirmed as Spiritual Director of the Seminary as well as Director of the Apostleship of Prayer. He held both offices till the very end.

The concern and interest of Fr. Agnelo for the well being of the Seminarians extended also to their material wants. He assisted poor students with money - his left hand not knowing what his right hand gave. He realised what expenses were incurred by parents who sent their sons to the Seminary specially when they came from less privileged families. Regarding this he said to one of the professors "It is not necessary to be very scrupulous about passing a student, but you have to be scrupulous in failing him, for thereby he suffers the loss of his money, his energy and of the year of the priesthood".

Fr. Agnelo was also an impressive preacher not because of any flourish of rhetoric but because every word he spoke from the pulpit came out from the depths of his heart.

In 1927 his weak health seemed to be breaking down. The 'beast of burden' as he used to call his body could not stand the strains any longer of his ceaseless labours, austerities and vigils in spite of medical care. When his condition appeared to have slightly improved he returned to the Seminary even though he had already a pre-sentiment that his death was drawing near.

In the meantime the feast of the Sacred Heart drew near. Fr. Agnelo was greatly devoted to the Sacred Heart his superiors seeing his health had improved due to medical treatment asked him to preach the novena of the Sacred Heart in the Rachol Seminary where the feast was celebrated in the month of November.

Classes and Novenas followed each other until the evening of November 19th 1927 at vespers of the feast when the Blessed Sacrament was exposed. Fr. Agnelo mounted the pulpit and began his discourse. That evening the usual fire and eloquence seemed to have deserted him. His pitch was low and as he continued speaking his voice became fainter and fainter. The end of the sermon was early and as the saintly priest knelt for a final thanksgiving prayer in the pulpit he lost balance and was borne away in a helpless but conscious state. He insisted on being laid on a bench in the corridor of the church where he lay devoutly with folded hands to receive the benediction of the Blessed Sacrament that followed the end of the vespers.

But he was still conscious and desired to be laid on a bench in the corridor from where he received the Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament that followed the end of the Vespers. Fr. Agnelo had suffered a coronary thrombosis with paralysis of the left arm and leg. Treatment was administered at once and the Last Sacrament called for. When asked if he wished to make his confession the saintly priest by a decisive nod of his head revealed that he was really prepared for the end. He received the last rites and then lapsed into a coma. He had often desired to die on the feast of the Sacred Heart, and the Lord heard his prayer.

On the following day the funeral was very largely attended by people from all corners of Goa eager to pay their last tribute to a saintly priest.

the funeral was solemn but what impressed all most was the vast crowd that attended it. People gathered from distant corners of Goa to pay their last tributes to the sainty priest. Everyone felt that a saint had passed away. The parish priest of Rachol who conducted the last rites said after the funeral 'I have just laid a saint to rest'.

The sanctity of Fr. Agnelo's life rapidly spread all over Goa and beyond, and drew many pilgrims to visit his grave seeking cures and extraordinary favours. The Patriarch-Archbishop of Goa at the time, Dom Teotonio Viera de Castro, on seeing one day a crowd of pilgrims at the grave remarked: "Our Fr. Agnelo is already a Venerable". The Goa clergy and laity sent petitions to the Patriarch to start the process of his beatification.

The Diocesan and Pilar Society authorities decided to exhume his remains secretly, on January 10, 1939, and at odd hours in order to avoid a public spectacle, and to transfer them to the Pilar Monastery. In spite of all the care taken, even by changing the normal route from Rachol to Pilar, ( over 25 Kilometers) thousands of people already flocked around the cemetery of Rachol and all along the route till Pilar.

When the coffin carrying the remains had crossed the river Zuari, five music bands were already in attendance awaiting at Agasaim to welcome solemnly the remains. The crows were so great that the procession could hardly advance and the village headmen vied with one another to have the privilege of shouldering the coffin to carry it to the Pilar hillock where the remains found their permanent resting place.

From that day onwards thousands of people from all walks of life, irrespective of race, sex or creed, began to track the then over hundred steep and narrow steps to Pilar Monastery, sometimes even on knees, to seek favours or thank Fr. Agnelo for his intercession.

The process of Beatification was started on April 2, 1947 by the appointment of Friar Agostino della Virgine OSST as the first Postulator in Rome, and the collection of the writings of Fr. Agnelo. The diocesan process on the writings of Fr. Agnelo formally started on April 4, 1956 with the Tribunal appointed by the Archbishop Patriarch of Goa, Dr. Jose Viera Alvernaz.

This process was completed and sent to Rome on June 11, 1956, and approved by the Sacred Congregation of Rites May 12, 1958, and Pope Pius XII on May 29, 1958.

The second diocesan process on the Sanctity and Virtues started on August 16, 1956 with the new diocesan Tribunal taking the oath of office.

After lengthy sessions, of over 3 years and 2 months and the examination of 28 witnesses from all walks of and conditions of life, the process was completed and sent to Rome on October 10, 1959.

It passed through the minutest scrutiny and was finally approved by the Sacred Congregation of Rites on July 9, 1968.

The third and last diocesan process of Non Public Veneration started with the taking of the oath by the Ecclesiastical Tribunal on November 11, 1959.

The recordings of the Process were sent to Rome on June 5, 1960 and finally approved by Sacred Congregation of Rites on May 27, 1969.

With the approval of the three diocesan processes the ground has been cleared to initiate the apostolic processes.

By mandate from the Holy See, the Apostolic Tribunal assumed its office with the Most Rev. Fr. Raul Gonsalves, then Auxiliary Bishop, now Patriarch Archbishop of Goa, as its President on October 8, 1970.

The process was completed and sent to Rome in May 1974. The process on sanctity and practice of virtues in a heroic degree of the Servant of Goa was finally approved by the Sacred Congregation for the Causes of Saints by a Decree dated November 10, 1986, and made Fr. Agnelo de Souza, a Venerable.

Now the only step left for the Servant of God to be declared BLESSED is a miracle. One of the extraordinary favours was submitted to the Diocesan Scrutiny and sent to Rome, but awaits approval.

Fr. Joseph Vaz, Day of "Blessed Joseph Vaz", Fr. Joseph Vaz, Sancoale Goa

The feast of Blessed Joseph Vaz was celebrated today i.e. 16-01-2009.
The feast was attended by people from all over Goa in large numbers.

The main celebrant for the high mass was Filipe Neri Ferrao, Auxiliary Bishop.
He stressed on the importance family values played in the life of Blessed Fr. Joseph Vaz. He stated how in his fathers dream it was appeared to him that his son would be a great man. he was called a little saint among his friends. He stated how catechism, prayers, mass, responsibilities played a role in developing faith in a child in a family.
His increased faith lead him to his vocation as a priest. He used to pray a lot before the blessed sacrament at the Cortalim church at night. It is said that the doors of the church opened for him when he went to pray. He has a lot of faith and reflection in the way of the cross. His faith in Mother Mary and the Rosary increased his faith. Filipe Neri Ferrao, Auxiliary Bishop also stressed on our prays in increasing our faith. The prays could be personal, community prays or the holy mass. Fr. Joseph Vaz, on being ordained as a priest went to Kanara and gave life and message of faith by his prays. From there he went to Sri lanka and resurrected the faith of Christianity there. he served for 24 years in Sri Lanka. In the year 2011, it would complete 300 death anniversary of Blessed Joseph Vaz, In Sri Lanka he worked in disguise and he exhibited faith through his work and sufferings.
After the mass, the Fr.Eremito thanked all those who made this year event a big success.

THE LIFE OF BLESSED JOSEPH VAZ

Blessed Joseph Vaz , the third of the six children of Christopher Vaz and Maria de Miranda, was born on 21st April 1651 at Pulvaddo, Benaulim at his maternal house and was baptised in the Church of St. John the Baptist, Benaulim on 28th April 1651. He grew up at his father's house at Sancoale where today stand only the oratory room of his ancestral home.

Josephs parents were very religious and the meticulously catered to the spiritual and moral formation of their children. value and prayer oriented environment at home greatly contributed toward the formation of young Joseph and inspired him to dedicate his life for god and the service of gods people. After his elementary education in Sancoale and studies of Latin in Benaulim, Joseph studied at the Jesuit college of St. Paul, Old Goa. drawn towards the priestly vocation, he completed his philosophical and theological studies at the academy of St. Thomas Aquinas with flying colours. Fr. Joseph Vaz was ordained a priest in 1676 by arch bishop Antonio Brandao but was not given any ecclesiastical office. perhaps the church authorities could not find a job suitable to his brilliant performance at the seminary but he was given faculties to preach and hear confession throughout the archdiocese. Never discouraged, man of great faith, Fr. Joseph Vaz came to his paternal village of sancoale and opened a Latin school for the education of the village boys and also gave himself to prayer, preaching and hearing confessions. and assisting the local parish-priest. In 1677 at foot of the altar of blessed virgin Mary, church of our lady of heath, sancoale, Goa he wrote his letter (a classic) surrendering himself into her hands to be disposed off as she wished. when he approached the church authority to on on mission to Sri Lanka where all catholic priests were driven out by the Dutch protestants (Calvinist), he was sent to Kanara (Mangalore) in 1682. after his return from Kanara, he joined the Goan Oratory, a native religious community in 1685 and having duly prepared himself physically and spiritually to face all the hardships that will come his way, he in 1686 set out for the perilous mission to Sri Lanka to save the catholic faith from the clutches of Dutch protestants. With the blessings of the Archbishop of Goa, Fr. Joseph Vaz set out on his perilous journey in March 1686, taking for his luggage his breviary and the requisites for saying mass. He had with him only an Oratorian Father, a Brother and a young boy named John, who attended him at the altar. After nine months in his former Mission, it was only on January 3, 1687, that he went his way down the Malabar Coast. The dangers and challenges were so great that the two other priest who had accompanied him returned to Goo and Fr. Joseph Vaz was left alone with his faithful servant John, in 1687, exhausted and weary, but undaunted in his faith, Joseph and John arrived in Sri Lanka. Once in Sri lanka Fr. Joseph Vaz watered and manured the dying catholic faith with the sweat of his brow. The present catholic church in Sri Lanka which is divided into 12 dioceses was rebuilt on strong foundations laid by Blessed Fr. Joseph Vaz an priest from Goa (Oratorians) for 150 years. At Cochin the latter could not discharge any priestly functions as the Dutch were occupying the town. He even remained hidden until the departure of the small vessel that was to carry him to Quilon. From Quilon the travellers passed into Travancore, where Fr. Joseph Vaz sojourned for some time in a Jesuit College to learn Tamil, the language spoken in the North of Ceylon. Fr. Joseph Vaz could no longer travel in his ecclesiastical garb, for, the Dutch would have arrested him. The Rector supplied him with the dress of poor natives and slaves and in that dress, barefooted, Fr. Joseph Vaz and John reached Tuticorin the Indian port nearest to Ceylon, towards the end of March 1687. A batch-mate of Fr. Joseph Vaz at Goa University was the Jesuit Missioner in charge of Tuticorin and they were happy to find themselves together again after so many years. Yet Fr. Joseph Vaz had to keep his disguise of an itinerant menial for fear of betraying himself. The Dutch occupied a Fort at Tuticorin and kept a strict watch on all intending passengers to Ceylon. Easter came and Fr. Vaz could not resist and bear to let such a great feast pass without offering a divine sacrifice. The Dutch commander in Fort was instantly apprised and he issued orders to all craft masters along the coast not to take on board any passenger to Ceylon without a pass from him personally. This was a great disappointment for Fr. Vaz, but three days later, the Dutch officer died suddenly. His successor failed to detect a Catholic priest in the garb of a poor workman and on being asked for a pass by Fr. Joseph Vaz himself, issued the document without much ado. Put to sea in a small sailing smack with John his young servant, Fr. Joseph Vaz was fortunate to find on board a Catholic Portuguese of good position. That man full of zeal and faith promised the priest that once in Jaffna he would take him to one of his friends in whose house he would run no risk of being apprehended by the Dutch. A dreadful storm bust upon them and for 20 days they were at sea. Being tossed on the high seas for such a long time without food Fr. Joseph Vaz was compelled to break journey in Mannar. Fr. Joseph Vaz was carried to the shore at Mannar in a state of starvation and dehydration. Fr. Joseph Vaz knew no one in Jaffna and he wandered about the whole day in quest of shelter for the night was refused entry to all abodes. At last a woman, more charitably inclined, permitted him to lie down in MANDU, a structure barely consisting of a roof placed on pillars. The mandu was opposite her house on the other side of the street and such buildings were erected by Indians along trunk roads or in vicinity of temples to accommodate travelers or pilgrims. But soon the stupendous misery and starvation he had endured during his long voyage an the unwholesomeness of the food he received by begging from door to door began to tell on him and he was seized with very acute dysentery. This disease is considered very contagious by the Indians. Therefore the people around reproached the woman for having sheltered this stranger and as Fr. Joseph Vaz was unable to walk, they took him on bamboos to a forest near the city where they abandoned him. To complete his destitution the faithful John lay prostrate with the same malady. They were both in a desperate plight. Fr. Joseph Vaz thought that their last hour had come and they both prepared themselves for death. But a poor woman who had lost her way in the forest whilst gathering firewood chanced upon them when they seemed on the point of breathing their last. Moved with compassion, she ran home, brought some 'kanji'. This 'Good Samaritan' came daily with porridge and they thus regained their strength and were soon sufficiently strong enough to find their way back to Jaffna. The charitable virtues of Fr. Joseph Vaz won the admiration of the pagans and they held him in great veneration. Paganism fails to understand disinterested charity; but yet, it admires it. This was the cause of the respect paid by King Vimala-Dharmasuriya II to Fr. Joseph Vaz. To that pagan Prince, the Catholic priest was an enigma, which he approached only with supernatural awe. King Kandasala, the son and successor of King 'Vimala- Dharmasuriya, followed the paternal examples. One day when the King was passing in State before the church in Kandy, Fr. Joseph Vaz came out to salute him. The King stopped, received him with great cordiality and would not resume his walk until Fr. Joseph Vaz was indoors again. On 16th January, 1711 towards the hour of midnight with Fathers Gonzalves and Almeida Kneeling down near Fr. Joseph Vaz's death-bed entoned the Subvenite Sancti Dei. In the morning Fr. Gonzalves informed the King who testified his deep sorrow and at once enjoined on all the Christians in the palace to attend the funeral. Fr. Joseph Vaz died in the 60th year of his age, his apostolate in Ceylon having lasted 24 years. He was of middle size, of handsome features and his demeanour was dignified and sympathetic. The obsequies lasted three days and on Monday January 19th after a funeral oration pronounced by Fr. Gonzalves was the body deposited in a wooden coffin, lined inside with silk was buried in front of the High Altar in the Church of Our Lady of the Conversion of Pagans, built by Fr. Joseph Vaz in the Bogambara suburb. He founded the miraculous Shrine of Our Lady of Madhu, one of the five officially crowned Marian Shrines of the Church, crowned in 1924, before Fatima. He is the first non-European native in modern times to found a Mission and Church in a “Third World” country; to found a fully native Catholic Religious Congregation; and to be given the official title of “Apostle” (of Kanara and Sri Lanka) by the Church, for his work in rescuing the Church there. His Indian Oratorian Mission is the only fully native, non-European Catholic Mission of our colonial era. The Church he re-founded in Sri Lanka was persecuted and survived isolation from Rome for 140 years: "Here is a country in which the faith was first preached, and a Church founded with great success to flourish for over a century, by missionaries who, being afterwards forced by the political failure of their nation to abandon the field, left this island for good…and their converts… without churches or priests and under the heel of a persecutor; and a single priest (Joseph Vaz) from another country, came here of his own accord…and labouring heroically with a price upon his head, revived the faith and made many conversions in the teeth of persecution, imprisonment and hostility ..(no) subsequent political, social, and ecclesiastical changes in the country were ever able to undo his work; …It must be stated with caution and subject to correction, but no other instance of such an achievement is known in Christendom.” [Sri Lankan historian, Fr. S.G. Perera, S.J., from his book, The Life of the Venerable Father Joseph Vaz]. Miracles are signs which confirm the teaching of a person, Jesus said" if you don't believe in me, believe at least in my miracles" during his life time there are a number of miraculous happening attributed to Fr. Joseph Vaz. Holy places in Goa related to Blessed Joseph Vaz 1 Maternal house at Pulvaddo, Benaulim where he was born 2 Church of St. John the Baptist which has the Baptismal Font where he was baptised 3 The Oratory room of his paternal house at Sancoale where he grew up 4 Church of Cortalim where miraculously the door would open for him. 5 The Facade of the old church of Sancoale where he wrote his letter of total surrender to Mother Mary. 6 The church of the miraculous cross and the dilapidated Oratorian monastery where he lived as a member and superior and from were priest were supplied to Sri Lanka for 150 years
On 25th September 1685, at the church of Holy Cross of Miracles, Old Goa, he joined a community of Goan Priests who were trying to form a religions congregation of its own, He was elected their superior. With them he orgaised the regions first fully native religions congregation on the lines of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri of Rome and Lisbon, as the "Oratorian Institute of Milagristas of Goa".
The beatification of Fr. Joseph Vaz was con-celebrated on 20th January, 1995 when His Holiness Pope John Paul II pronounced the Beatification at the Galle Face Green, Colombo in the presence of a very large gathering of the faithful and people of all walks of life.

tan puro, y yo me siento
tan sobrecogido, tan conmovido ,
